I read with interest the Penarth Times article on a bilingual Christmas brochure (Christmas brochure to be bilingual after 2 complain, October 23). As a long term resident the Council are to be commended for their wise investment on bilingual provision for the growing number of Welsh speaking families and individuals who reside in the town. I for one had minimal opportunities to receive information in my first (most natural) preferred language. I revel in the fact that I now have a choice in all aspects of my personal and professional life. I prefer to read and write in Welsh and this gesture makes a difference to me. I am sensitive to some debates around costs but I truly feel this is wise investment in giving the right message out to the Penarth community some of whom are at times ill informed about the status and importance of the language to some people. Sadly I feel that it is used as a political tool sometimes.
I look forward to receiving my bilingual Christmas brochure as this year for the first time, we as a family have decided to do all our Christmas shopping in local Penarth shops and businesses.
