I am writing on behalf of the Penarth Civic Society Committee to request, from your readership, applications for the following posts becoming vacant next April following the AGM.

The posts are: Chairman, secretary and treasurer. The latter is particularly relevant with the present incumbent, after sterling work, leaving to take up a new challenge.

The Society has quite a large membership and a new, well qualified, treasurer will be responsible for keeping subscription records, running costs and all the usual expenses associated with a Charity Trust based group.

The present committee is quite small with four members already retiring or stepping down next April. The few remaining are all employed and volunteer on a part-time basis.

However, we have all worked jolly hard over the last three years having achieved, amongst other things, the following:- renovation of the Memorial Gardens at Alexandra Park; formed the Beach Wardens group for cleaning Penarth Beach; tackled graffiti around north Penarth; provided an essential gangway for pleasure cruise boats berthing at the pier; and formed a Penarth Heritage Centre at South Lodge in Windsor Gardens.

We also follow-up successful renovations with the presentation of a Civic Award – examples include the Pier Pavilion and Albert Road Church renovation. The award, however, is used sparingly - some years there are no awards. We also have members on the new groups being set up to implement the local Town Plan. All the above involve much paperwork, discussion and time to get to a result.

Failure for these posts to be filled would mean the probable closure of the Society which would be a very great shame.

The town is in need of such a group particularly in regard to the upheavals ahead for local government in the light of the Williams Report.

We do hope that new faces, particularly the early retired, can step up to the plate(s) and we look forward to welcoming them onto a small and friendly committee.

For further details contact the website.

Closing date for applications: Friday, January 16.
