SURPRISE, SURPRISE - the Vale has council received a new proposal for use of St Paul's Church. It will consider a development where a cafe would encourage customers to avail themselves of fitness activities. These they say will add to existing valued rugby and tennis clubs. No mention then of the well established and highly respected Boxing Club that existed there for many years. They, together with Penarth Gymnastics who were offered usage of the church in order to make way for the Pier Pavilion development had it's hopes dashed despite promises to both these long established organisations. They were told that the Section 106 money could be made available to assist them to turn the venue into a community fitness space for all. The votes canvassed by the Vale Council of the local residents showed overwhelming support for this new project. So much then for public opinion. The tens of thousands of pounds the gym club had raised to build a gymnasium as part of the new St Cyres School development - which was also vetoed by the Council has now been spent renting and equipping a first class gym facility, BUT although it retains its Penarth title and is flourishing -it is in Barry!

What now for the future of Penarth boxers? Maybe those members of the Vale Council who appreciate the value of the work they do will ensure that if the newly proposed project is to meet their approval - it must accommodate this much respected and well established boxing club.
