I read with some interest and increasing amazement your coverage of the plans for a cable car to link Penarth to central Cardiff. Having checked it wasn't April 1 and paused for a second to think how nice it would be to visit my dad in Penarth via cable car, I have to ask: is this plan to spend £100m a serious proposal?

I have no doubt Cardiff needs big ideas to develop as a leading 21st century European city, but big ideas need to make a practical difference to people's lives rather than be pie in the sky projects.

This is especially important at a time when public sector finances are under so much pressure.

Cardiff and the Vale have in transportation terms a big idea - the South Wales Metro - a proposal that if fully implemented with the emphasis on sustainable (public) transport could make a huge difference to people's lives.

Can you imagine what £100m could achieve if spent on improving cycling, walking and the public transport infrastructure in and around Penarth?

So let's be ambitious for our area - but ambitious for all our citizens, not just the relatively small numbers who would be attracted to a beautiful but rather impractical ride on a cable car!
