I READ with interest and nostalgia the "sailing vessels visit". In the late 1940s, newly married, my wife and I lived in a fishing village Porthleven in Mount's Bay, Cornwall.
I recall on evening seeing the top masts of two ships on the horizon, followed rapidly by the sight of two windjammers in line and under full sail; sailing west to east (it may have been the last Great Grain Race).
An unforgettable sight, we didn't know their identities at the time, the local press reported their sighting a few days later, they may have put in to Falmouth.
What was evident, even at a distance, was the speed and power of these ships when under full sail. One of the unforgettable moments in our life.
