HAPPY New Year to all except members of the Penarth fishing fraternity who've awoken to find that bass fishing, if not criminalised, isn't what it was.

I've taken the liberty of cutting and pasting a list of areas where it applies, so all clear then.

Internet research shows there's no mention of the Bristol Channel? Specific areas mentioned are North Sea, Irish sea, Channel, so carry on as normal up here then? One bass per day per angler, if only we were so lucky.

On the positive side most of us are quite responsible and catch and release and don't keep under-size fish, so if this helps stock recoveries let's support it

Has anyone any ideas on how this effects us, if at all,

In ICES Areas IVb, IVc, VIIa, VIId, VIIe, VIIf, VIIg, VIIh

• from January 1 to June 30 catch and release only permitted

• from July 1 to December 31 one bass per fisherman per day

In ICES areas VIIj and VIIk

• from January 1 to December 31 one bass per fisherman per day

Recreational fisheries include fishing from the shore.

If you have any queries please contact your local marine office.

Where's ours?

No chance of the fishing ban being lifted on the pier this summer now.
