THE demolition of the car park raises another point, rather than its aesthetic quality.

Whether its architecture was considered garish or not only affected onlookers if they were passing by on the paddle steamer or digging for lugworms at low tide.

Many of us were in disagreement about the demolition and its appearance was not the issue. After all, it’s just a car park and hardly visible from the road, being concealed by the cliff. It could be said to be an iconic piece of 70s architecture, probably being a one-off built on a beach.

With the development of the front, it was ideally placed and served its purpose adding to the town’s economy.

The complaints of many residents who thought it a waste of public money to demolish it at a time of unprecedented austerity fell on deaf ears.

Penarth and the car park came under the Vale, while we are represented in the Assembly by Cardiff South. Had we been represented by an MP in the area where we pay council tax, this may have had a different outcome and there may not have been such detriment to the public purse in demolishing it and now being faced with its reconstruction.

That Penarth is not represented by an MP in the Vale, as it had been prior to being merged with Cardiff South in 1983 is unjust. We should have representation where we are subject to taxation, and this should be addressed by the Welsh Secretary of State, Alun Cairns.

I would hate to think that we were merged with Cardiff South to annul the value of our votes deciding on who represents the Vale.
