READING the string of letters in the Penarth Times in recent weeks, Penarth residents are clearly expressing their concerns about the felling and poor maintenance of the distinctive and attractive street trees that are so much of the character of this Victorian seaside town.

This is so good to see – judging by the scale of the ‘tree carnage’ (Stop Felling Healthy Trees – May 12) or the Butchery of Street Trees (May 5), street trees of Penarth are obviously in need of protection and promotion if Penarth is to retain its urban tree-scape and its status as a ‘garden by the sea’. We think so too.

The Civic Society has recently established the Penarth Tree Forum. The forum is made up of local residents who are committed to retain the quality of this living experience by working with the Vale of Glamorgan council regarding decisions about street tree removals in order where possible to retain the urban tree-scape of Penarth.

A steering group of the tree forum is now meeting regularly and at our most recent meeting we heard encouraging reports on the work of a similar forum in Bristol which we are keen to learn from. Penarth Tree Forum will be organising open meetings every six months. The first of these will be on Monday, October 10. More details to follow.
