I UNDERSTAND the government intends to give the Welsh Assembly taxation powers, that it said this would not happen without a referendum, that there isn’t going to be a referendum and that the secretary of state refuses to discuss it with the leader of the Abolish the Assembly Party.

It is inconceivable that politicians would break a promise, so would Mr Cairns please tell us if I understand right.

The political class has created a whole freight yard of gravy trains for themselves, the absurd size of the House of Lords, jobs in Brussels, police and crime commissioners and the Welsh Assembly.

The Assembly is completely pointless and there are 332 or so people (Conservative MPs) who actually have the power to get rid of it.

Why doesn’t the Conservative Party do this instead of, to its eternal shame, colluding in the division of Britain?

Let readers ask themselves “How much better is my life because of the existence of the Assembly, is it commensurate with the countless hundreds of millions of pounds cost, would I be better off if the money were spent on the health service?”

I suggest that Mr Cairns knows very well that if there were another referendum the Assembly wouldn’t last a week.

Graham Jones.
