I FOR one am truly delighted that Tesco is opening in the Washington Buildings in Penarth.
The decision will add to the price competition with the local Co-op and Spar - all to consumer benefit.
It all fits in with Tesco's long-term business strategy which I believe is to continue to open more "out of town" large Tesco Extra stores, whilst at the same time closing many of their medium-size stores.
The existing Cogan Stores fits that criteria - so I think it will almost certainly close in the near future.
However don't be surprised if, when Asda opens their Leckwith superstore, that they close Cardiff Bay giving Tesco the perfect opportunity to open a Tesco Extra.
Whatever happens, retailing is all about choice, and Tesco's smaller stores, like their new Penarth Tesco Express, will save many people from having to use their car - which is environmentally friendly as well as healthy living.

It's fairly obvious that the site will make prime development for what, 700-1000 more flats?
I concur that Asda quite possibly may close the Bay, surely two stores within 2 miles of each other cannot make sense.
Perhaps Tesco may buy that Site?
I wonder how long it would then take to exit the VOG designed bottleneck at Barons Court etc?
Sunday May 4th at 13:00 with no road works or breakdowns, traffic was queuing from Monty Smiths to get out of Penarth.
What will happen when the promised "Tower block" is built and adds another 1800 domiciles to the area?
We don't really need a car park in Penarth, Penarth itself is rapidly becoming one...
