CYCLING, jogging and walking is obviously booming. Hooray!
The opening of the Cardiff Bay Barrage, the marvellous Taff Trail as far as Brecon, the Ely Trail, the new Pont y Werin bridge which will link to the Sports Village and thence via the big Link bridge toward Techniquest etc.
But, how will cyclists from Penarth and district get to the Pont y Werin bridge without hazarding the Windsor Road rat run? Try it at peak times.
The alternative climb up and over the Albert Road/ Paget Hill route is daunting and indirect.
If only we could get co-operation from Railtrack to permit a pathway alongside the now single Penarth line from say, the Dingle station (Windsor Road side) down to the Tesco car park, with a fence separating cyclists and others from the line, there would be an attractive feature for all those trying to avoid busy traffic.
Have a look – there’s space there now – but at Penarth station the space has unfortunately been built over.
Unrealistic? I am told there are fenced paths alongside quieter lines in East Anglia, which I am trying to locate, and also in places like Holland.
Whatever the solution, I hope that good access can be found to this new bridge from ‘our side.’ David Moorcraft Salop Street Penarth
