RNLI display for festival

WE hope that you now all have your own copy of the Penarth Summer Festival programme and that you enjoy it!

There is much to look forward to for this year’s festival that runs from July 5 to 15, with Carnival Day taking place on July 14. A huge thank you must go to all those who have taken the time to organise the individual events for the people of Penarth. It is because of these people that the festival has proven to be so popular over the years.

There are so many great things taking place on Carnival Day – make sure you don’t miss out. If there is anyone who wishes to take part in the parade or anyone who has a classic car/motorbike please make sure that you are at West House by 1pm on July 14. We can now confirm that the much-anticipated RNLI display with the Search and Rescue Helicopter, which has become the keystone event of Carnival Day, will take place at 3pm at the Esplanade.

Four lifeboat crew members will be on board Penarth’s larger lifeboat, the Atlantic 85 – named the Maureen Lillian – and along with the Search and Rescue helicopter from RAF Chivener will simulate the rescue of a capsized yacht.

Penarth’s smaller Inland Life Boat – the Connie Dains – will remain at the lifeboat station where members of the public are invited to come along and explore, and chat to the volunteer crew members about the work of Penarth’s RNLI.

The RNLI rescue demonstration depends upon the weather, and upon the availability of the rescue helicopter which may be called away at short notice for an emergency.

Later in the afternoon we have the fantastic hawk display that wowed the crowds a couple of years ago.

BRO Radio (98.1FM and online at broradio.fm) will be providing the onstage presence at the Penarth Festival Carnival. BRO Radio has been broadcasting to the Vale, including Penarth, since March 2009. It provides a wide mix of programmes for all ages and is manned by volunteers. They are always looking for volunteers. For details, call 01446 420681.

The very first summer festival in took place in July 1965, and 47 years later it is still one of the highlights of the year.

It is something that Penarth can be very proud of and should support for many years to come.

If you have any fond memories, experiences or photographs of previous summer festivals in Penarth please share them with us and email them to me at khutchings@penarthtownouncil.gov.uk or alternatively post them to Penarth Town Council, West House, Stanwell Road, CF64 2YG.

There is much for you to enjoy on Carnival Day, so come and support the event and bring all the family!

We are very pleased to announce that there will be donkey rides at the Clifftops from 1pm through till 5pm on Carnival Day, which used to be a permanent fixture throughout the festival’s history, and we are pleased to get them back. The classic cars will also gather along the cliff path for inspection.

We look forward to seeing you on the day but if you have any queries in the meantime regarding the festival please do not hesitate to contact me on the number above.

All the information can be found on the events section of the town council website via www.penarthtown council.gov.uk If you need a summer festival programme come into the council offices and get one.
