Friend was a great helper

AS THE man involved in the airlift incident reported in the Penarth Times on July 19, I wish to thank you for an accurate and comprehensive account. The emergency services were, quite rightly, thanked for their prompt and efficient handling of my rescue. I would however like to record publicly my gratitude to my companion Chris Wyatt for the calm and speedy manner in which he, using his cap as a pad, staunched the flow of blood with pressure on my forehead and quickly called the ambulance service and guided them to our location.

Some years ago the Penarth beach had become badly litter strewn. Chris had the idea and drive to establish the Beach Warden Group of unpaid volunteers in association with the Penarth Society. We started in the summer of 2007. We have no rota, but litterpick singularly or in pairs when convenient.

We may not have had much publicity but the cleanliness of our core area – from the sewage outlet just north of the pier to the end of the new (concrete) sea wall – is entirely due to our efforts. We hope that the current appearance encourages visitors to take their litter home with them.
