Agitation for the car lobby

WHAT a peculiar letter from self-proclaimed Penarth ‘local activist’ Bablin Molik in the Penarth Times (July 26). She seems unaware that the Con-Dem coalition which she supports has already stated its intention to electrify the line from Grangetown to Penarth.

She also does not realise that the only major problem with Penarth’s train service is actually reaching it from within Penarth, since car parking at the station is so limited, and Plymouth Road residents – quite rightly – object to commuters who have nowhere else to leave their cars clogging up their road.

If she were agitating for a shuttle bus around lower Penarth to connect regularly to train services, I might have more sympathy for her cause.

However, she seems to forget her ‘green’ credentials when it suits her, by launching a campaign last week on Facebook against Cardiff Labour’s idea of a ‘congestion charge’ on traffic coming in to the city.

Though I think there are better ways to reduce commuter traffic jams than congestion charges, to pander to the car lobby in this way seems to be hypocritical in the extreme.

And so does her new-found enthusiasm for Penarth ‘causes’, as seen in the forest’s-worth of leaflets her supporters have already pushed through our doors.

But then, I’m not putting myself forward for election to replace Alun Michael am I?
