It's Chico time! A woman walking the coastal path was in Penarth for the local leg today, with an unlikely companion

A WELSH woman walking the entire coastal path of Wales was in town for the Penarth leg of her route on Tuesday (September 10) – joined by her donkey, Chico.
It’s not everyday you see a donkey saddled with clothes, camping kit and other essential walking equipment strolling the esplanade, and the sight drew some quizzical stares from people and pavilion workmen.
But Hannah Engelkamp and her gentle campanion, who set out on the mammoth challenge from Aberystwyth at the end of May, are used to the gawking.
Hannah, a travel writer, set out on the walk to highlight the fact that not all travelling needs to be done abroad, and that big adventures can be found right on our doorstep everyday.
“I’m very keen on the idea of home holidays and adventures that aren’t about jet lag and culture shock and going to the other side of the world,” said the 34-year-old, who stayed with a friend on Beach Road during her stay locally.
“Also I like the idea of having an adventure on my own doorstep and I wanted to see more of the country I was born and raised in.
“Penarth is lovely. It’s very lofty, quiet and calm.”
Hannah has since started fundraising for a number of charities, including the Penytrip Project, which brings together rescued horse and troubled children.
She said Chico, five, had proved a strong, stoic and dependable companion.
“I have never owned an animal before and knew nothing about donkeys, but I’m not a dog person and a donkey seemed like a better ice-breaker anyway," she added.
“People have responded really well and everyone seems to get it.”
Hannah and Chico travelled from Llandaff on Monday (September 9), along the Taff Trail, and through the Bay to Penarth.
They will depart for Barry later this afternoon and finish back in Aberystwyth in around another two months.
