Magnificent displays at the Dinas Powys Village Show

CROWDS flocked to the Village Show in Dinas Powys in record numbers and were rewarded with magnificent displays and exhibits and a variety of entertainment in the gardens.
Guest of Honour Terry Walton, star of Radio 2's Jeremy Vine garden slot, presented the prizes and welcomed the good-natured competitive spirit of the community.
The chairman of the show, Val Hartrey, thanked the volunteers, the patrons, Brynawel garden centre for the stage decoration and the contestants for making this one of the most memorable shows. Thanks also go to the village shops and others who gave great prizes to the excellent raffle. It was very encouraging to have many new entrants in the show as well as more experienced exhibitors.
There were mouth- watering cakes, artisan bread, tarts and fruit scones, jams and chutneys, enough to rival the Great British Bake-Off!
The trestle tables almost groaned with the amount of fine looking vegetables, herbs and attractive fruit that were presented in abundance. Also, the much-loved ‘Whopper’ section of giant pumpkins, marrow and potatoes was well supported.
The collages made by the Guide and Scout organisations were colourful and excellently done. The two scarecrows that had been made to advertise the show were impressive as were those entered into that class. All were a source of interest and amusement.
Beautiful garden flowers including sweet peas, gladioli, dahlias and pelargonium were very well represented. Paintings and photos were a little down in number but were an attractive display.
The WI prepared the tea and refreshments and did a roaring trade. There were many attractions for the children including a bouncy castle, Punch and Judy, model trains and an owl display plus the always popular Dinas Powis Ecumenical Seven. Colourful gazebos housed other organisations of the village.
