LOCAL auctioneers Rogers Jones recently set a Welsh record for a painting sold by Sir Kiffin Williams with a £50,000 sale, and now they are to offer a further 30 works by Sir Kiffin – expected to fetch around £250,000 in total.
It will be the auctioneers second sale at their new Llandough showroom after its Welsh Sale in July, which set the record price.
More than 300 lots by various artists will be available in the sale on Saturday September 28.
Focussing solely on Welsh art 13 prints, eight watercolours and 10 oils are being sold on behalf of various private owner collectors.
It will represent a cross section of Sir Kyffin’s work - Wales’s greatest and best loved 20th century artist.
“Kyffin has always featured largely in our Welsh Sales, which previously were held only in our North Wales saleroom,” said Rogers Jones auctioneer Ben Rogers Jones.
“But after the success of our first sale in Cardiff, we have seen a great many more of his pictures coming on to the market.
“On the artist’s death in 2006, his executors instructed us to value his estate and the remaining works it contained, making us uniquely placed to handle sales of his paintings without the high costs associated with the London salerooms.
“I believe we have sold more Kyffin Williams pictures than any other regional saleroom. To have achieved a Welsh record price in our inaugural Welsh Sale in Cardiff was one of my proudest moments.”
Leading the collection is a serene, atypical seascape in oils, sent for sale from a private collection in the Vale of Glamorgan, which is estimated at £35,000-£40,000. Titled ‘Sun Behind Cloud Bank’, the painting is composed as three horizontal bands of colour representing sea and sky in a compelling Rothko-esque vista.
For collectors with shallower pockets, the sale includes a variety of prints by Sir Kyffin, with estimates starting at £80. Pencil and ink studies and watercolours start at £400.
The sale comprises a huge selection of works by most of Wales’s leading contemporary artists, as well as up and coming artists setting out to make a name for themselves. All 330 lots in the sale will be on view in a free pre-sale exhibition at the saleroom on on Wednesday September 25 from 4-7pm; Thursday September 26 from 4-8pm, Friday September 27 from 1-8pm.
A final exhibition will be held on the morning of the sale from 9am. Entry to the sale is also free. It starts at 11am.
The saleroom can be found at 17 Llandough Trading Estate, Penarth Road.
