A PENARTH restaurant continues to serve up the goods – racking up awards, plaudits and rave reviews.
At the start of the year, The Fig Tree was named in the Where Chefs Eat guide – one of just five restaurants in Wales to be included.
Last year, it won Best Restaurant at the True Taste Food and Drink Awards.
And now the Esplanade-based eatery has been named in the 2014 Good Food Guide, for the third consecutive year – with it’s highest rating yet.
The popular spot, formerly the site of the Victorian bathing huts, was the only restaurant in the Vale of Glamorgan to be named in the guide at all.
But it’s ‘three’ rating also ranked it alongside just one other restaurant in the wider Cardiff area.
Gordon Ramsey was one of the highest rated in the country, earning a ‘nine’ out of ten.
The best-selling guide ‘brings together the best places to eat out from throughout the country’.
It called the Fig Tree food “amazing”.
The anonymous reviewer ate rabbit terrine to start, the free-range pork main, and the bread-and-butter pudding with blood orange sorbet to finish.
Owners Mike Caplan-Hill and Sandie Guppy said all expectations had been exceeded since opening in 2009.
Sandie said: “It’s really exciting. Not just for us, but for Penarth as a whole because it brings people to the town. We can’t wait to be part of a vibrant, bustling seafront.”
Mike added: “We just wanted to provide simple, fresh, affordable food. It’s great that is appreciated by customers and critics alike. It vindicates everything.”
Twenty-two year-old Tom Westerland is the chef at the Fig Tree, having started out as the commis.
“It’s the simplicity and the fresh, seasonal produce which I think sets us apart,” he said.
*The Fig Tree is holding a vegetarian week with guest chef David Tomlinson from November 4-9.
*It’s Christmas and New Year menu’s are now online.
*Mike and Sandie are also looking for an experienced chef de partie to join the team.
