AN actress from Penarth will be taking the lead role in an exciting new project at Cardiff's Sherman Theatre.
Annes Elwy plays the lead role in Fe Ddaw'r Byd I Ben (The World Will End), the latest work by award winning Welsh language playwright Dafydd James.
A darkly comic drama about an estranged daughter returning to her Vale of Glamorgan home to announce the end of the world, the play was developed in collaboration with final year students at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Student Annes, 21, will be adding the part of Sara, the daughter, to her portfolio which already includes two productions for the National Youth Theatre of Wales and a television role in S4C school drama Gwaith/Cartref.
Annes said the chance to perform in a play by an acclaimed writer and starring alongside Pobl y Cwm star Siw Hughes and established actor John Norton was an exciting prospect.
"It's a brilliant play," she said. "It's got all these great characters and the chance to work with Dafydd James is amazing."
Annes discovered her passion for acting at her school, Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg, where she originally set her sights on becoming a dietician.
Now, well on her way to a professional acting career, Annes hopes to be able to work in both theatre and television, enjoying both mediums for their individual challenges.
"They're both so different," she said. "In an ideal world I'd love to do both.
"It's television that pays but I'd like to be able to do theatre for the thrill of it."
Fe Ddaw’r Byd I Ben (The World Will End) will be at the Sherman Theatre from February 11 to 15. Ticket prices are £12, £2 for concessions, and half price for under 25s.
Performances are suitable for ages 14 plus and can be enjoyed by non-Welsh speakers as English subtitles are offered at both performances on Friday, February 14.
