AS PART of their commitment to foreign language learning, pupils at St Cyres School participated in a European Day event for the eleventh consecutive year recently.

All pupils in Year 9 spent a whole day immersed in European languages culture.

More than 200 pupils enjoyed a day of varied and wonderful European activities.

The school took on a European atmosphere as halls and corridors were decked with flags, posters and information relating to Europe - its variety of cultures, food, people and languages.

Smells of foreign dishes wafted through the corridors as pupils tried their hands at French and German culinary delights.

Several months of preparation bore fruit as outside agencies and staff from a variety of departments gave their time to support the day. The Modern Foreign Languages Department is indebted to all those who so willingly participated. The MFL Department is particularly grateful to the PE, Catering, and Music Departments for helping to make the day a truly cross-curricular event.

Other activities included salsa dancing, crepes-making, a Euro-sounds quiz, Russian and Spanish taster sessions, an insight into the life of a languages student at Cardiff University and Mad Hatters who looked at stereotyping, all helping to form a very exciting and enjoyable day.

The feedback from the Year 9 pupils was extremely enthusiastic and the excitement of the day caused huge interest among other year groups who were not involved.

A number of pupils were nominated during the day for their outstanding efforts including Louis Jamieson, Rebecca Oldreive, Thomas Kitch, Harri Herniman, Ben Thomas, Olivia Newing and Callum Stone.
