PENARTH Pier Pavilion has been nominated for a host of building awards after its £4million redevelopment.

The pier pavilion, which opened to the public in December last year, made the RICS Wales Awards shortlist that rewards the "most impressive new and regenerated building projects" in Wales.

The hugely popular redevelopment has been nominated in the tourism and leisure, community benefit, commercial, and building conservation categories. The pavilion, which features a multi-functional gallery, cinema, cafe and restaurant ,was praised for offering "exciting exhibitions, films and a full events schedule including live music and locally sourced food and drink that can be enjoyed by the general public.

Widely regarded as the principalities property Oscars, RICS Wales has received 52 entries in the eight categories, from a total of 22 Projects.

The Clink, Cynon Valley Community Hospital, Penarth Pier Pavilion, Ffernes Theatre and Newport Market make up some of the projects competing across the country.

Eight category winners and a Project of the Year will be selected from the 48 shortlisted entries to the awards.

The winners from the Building Conservation, Community Benefit, Design through Innovation and the Regeneration categories will then be invited to represent Wales and compete against projects from across the rest of the UK, at the overall RICS Awards in London.

The 2013 Project of the Year title went to Ty Hedfan, Brecon.

Ben Collins, Director RICS Wales, said: "The quality of entries received this year is truly outstanding and clearly demonstrates the fantastic work being carried out by property professionals. There is a wealth and variety of inspirational new projects and regenerated developments and I am sure it will be a challenging judging process.”

Judging for the awards will take place during spring 2014 with the RICS Wales Awards ceremony being held at the SWALEC Stadium, in the heart of Cardiff's Sophia Gardens, on Thursday,May 15. The RICS Awards UK national ceremony will take place in London in October 2014.

The RICS Wales Awards 2014 showcase the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment, celebrating the achievements of professionals working in both the built and natural environment.
