EGGHEADS quizzer CJ de Mooi has volunteered to host a charity quiz night in aid of a Penarth boy born with a rare form of cerebral palsy.

Celebrity quizzer CJ read about Fiona and Rod’s fundraising in aid of 20-month-old Alfie Porter-Smith in last week’s Penarth Times after the story was tweeted by his friend and celebrity chef James Sommerin.

“I was very moved and, hoping I wasn't intruding, offered my services as I saw Fiona wanted to host a fundraising quiz,” he said.

“Penarth is easy for me to get to as I've lived in south east Wales for eight years so I suggested I could act as quizmaster which might possibly bring in a few more players and raise the profile for the lovely Alfie.”

CJ, who has previously raised money for various charities and awareness about homelessness after living rough himself for three years, added that he had been to Penarth ‘many times’.

“I used to have singing lessons there when preparing for my first West End musical last year and am really looking forward to visiting James Sommerin's new restaurant when it opens,” he said.

Fiona and Rod are hoping to raise £50,000 to help pay for Alfie to undergo intense physiotherapy and muscle strengthening over the next few years. The money will go towards paying for advanced biomechanical rehabilitation (ABR), physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and strengthening and conditioning coaching over the coming years.

Fiona, of Heol y Brenin in Penarth, said she was “over the moon” when CJ got in contact last week.

“I was absolutely amazed and couldn’t believe it,” she said.

“It’s amazing to think that someone in his position that doesn’t need to do anything like that is willing to help.

“It’s humbling that he wants to give up his time to help us.”

She added: “I’m just so thrilled I can’t believe it.

“I’m hoping Penarth now does us proud against the Egghead!”

The quiz night has been moved to Sunday, March 9, in order to fit into CJ’s schedule.

The quiz night will take place from 7.30pm at Penarth Conservative Club.

CJ de Mooi’s next project will be the new quiz show ‘Revenge of the Egghead’ starting on Monday, February 24, on BBC Two at 6pm.

He is also set to perform in two plays in London later this year.

“I am performing two single act pieces as a double header each night for four weeks at the Tristan Bates Theatre in central London from April 22,” he said.

“The plays are Safe Sex and On Tidy Endings and I appear in both but the latter also features the wonderful Deena Payne from Emmerdale.”
