FOR many people Lent is a time for reflection, preparation and prayer, and for some a time of ‘giving up’ or ‘taking on’.
While encouraging this approach to Lent, this year the Parish of Penarth and Llandough have arranged a programme of devotional events which is very different from the normal Lenten pattern of courses and services.
On Monday evenings there will be three quarters of an hour of devotional music, directed by Robert Court with the church choir augmented by members of the Cardiff University Choir.
The Rector, Canon Roger Williams, said: "I hope that by hearing works of a devotional nature by composers like JS Bach, Couperin and Dietrich Buxtehude people will be drawn into the quiet atmosphere of St Augustine's at the end of a busy day and reflect, meditate, pray or just sit and enjoy the beautiful music."
Music will be introduced by Robert Court and for those who want to meditate notes will be available. These evenings are not concerts but the final one on April 7, Membra Nostri Jesu by Buxtehude, will be performed by the Vox Vocal Ensemble.
On Thursday evenings those who like something more structured will enjoy ‘Seven Sacred Spaces’ a Diocesan course on the monastic life and how it can relate to our lives today.
Short power point presentations will cover Prayer, Worship, Decisions, Meetings, Work, Sharing and Study. These evenings should stimulate lively discussions with the added bonus of refreshments.
Every Friday there will be the Stations of the Cross, a prayerful way of walking with Christ through his Passion, is followed at St Augustine's Church at noon. Most of those attending then go on to the Lent Lunches at the Salvation Army Hall in Plassey Street.
On Monday evenings, starting on March 10, 7pm in St Augustine's Church - ‘Pause for Reflection’, running every Monday for 5 weeks.
On Thursday evenings, starting on Thursday, March 13, 7pm in the Parish Hall, Albert Road, Penarth, ‘Seven Sacred Spaces’.
On Fridays at noon , starting on March 14 in St Augustine's Church - Stations of the Cross
