TWO well-known Welsh TV personalities are set for book signings in Penarth.

Weatherman and TV presenter Derek Brockway will be signing copies of his latest book ‘Great Welsh Walks’ at Windsor Bookshop on Saturday, March 22, while Welsh comedian and writer Griff Rhys Jones will be signing copies of ‘Insufficiently Welsh ‘on Saturday, April 5, at The Gallery in All Saints Church.

Derek, who was born in Barry, will be in the Windsor Bookshop between 11am and 12pm before moving on to Barry Library where he will be between 2.30pm and 4pm.

Griff Rhys Jones, who will also be holding a talk and question and answer session, will be at All Saints Church from 3.30pm onwards for his book signing, with tickets priced £3.

In Great Welsh Walks Derek Brockway and co-author Martin Aaron presents 18 of their favourite walks from all over Wales. They range from the steep hills and mountains of Snowdonia to the coastal paths of Pembrokeshire and Anglesey; from busy Cardiff Bay to zigzagging along the Offa’s Dyke Path.

Each walk comes with an introduction by Derek, an OS-based map, grid references, detailed directions and pictures of significant landmarks. Suitable for all abilities, they are fun, free and help keep readers fit while taking in some of the best scenery in the world.

“Being a BBC weatherman is my dream job,” said Derek Brockway.

“Although work has taken me around the UK and abroad, Wales will always be home and, in my opinion, there’s no better place to live. We’re so lucky to have so much variety packed into one small country - Wales is made for walking, and whatever the weather there’s always something new to be discovered. Although the 18 walks in this book only scratches the surface, it gives a good taste of what our country has to offer.”

Insufficiently Welsh was written to accompany the recent ITV series A Great Welsh Adventure with Griff Rhys Jones and includes stunning photography from the series.

The informal guide follows Griff’s mission to explore the real Wales beyond the tourist trail, full of the hidden treasures and eccentric characters that makes this country so unique.

Griff said: “Well the clue is in the name… son of Elwyn and Gwynneth, scion of Megan and Ieuan and Evan, spawn of Betwys-y-Coed, Penmachno and the Rhondda, dark of hair, thick-thighed and round-faced. Griffith Rhys Jones. I was born in Cardiff. My mother was from Ferndale in the Rhondda, my father was from Penylan. Every single one of my relatives… were Welsh. I think I am Welsh.

“But am I insufficiently Welsh?

“That is what this book is all about, going out on the road to search for my Celtic roots and explore the ‘land of my aunties’. Language, the landscape, rugby, dogs, legends, botany, wildlife, furniture and a few more bits on the side: I looked into them all and here are the results.”

Derek Brockway will be in the Windsor Bookshop between 11am and 12pm on Saturday, March 22, before moving on to Barry Library where he will be between 2.30pm and 4pm.

Griff Rhys Jones will be discussing his journey and reading from his new book Insufficiently Welsh at The Gallery, All Saints Church, from 3.30pm onwards on Saturday, April 5.

Tickets are £3.00 each, to include refreshments, and available from The Windsor Bookshop or by calling 02920 706455.
