A GROUP of local singers have combined their talents to arrange a fundraising concert in aid of a local boy born with a rare form of cerebral palsy.

Alfie Porter-Smith was born five weeks early and is now 21 months old. His parents Fiona and Rod are trying to raise funds for much needed therapy for Alfie.

“Since the Penarth Times ran a feature on Alfie a few weeks ago, we have been overwhelmed by the support from local Penarth residents and businesses,” said Fiona.

“We have been contacted by so many kind people offering us both assistance in fundraising, and their best wishes for Alfie”.

The concert, entitled 'Our Gift our Song', is being arranged by Nick Pratt and his daughter Lizzie. Nick, who is also from Penarth, has gathered together some of the best talent in the area, to produce an evening of songs from musicals. The highlights of the evening will include songs from Wicked, Les Miserable, Jeckyll & Hyde and Cabaret. Lizzie will be arranging a light, but delicious supper for everyone attending. The musical director for the evening will be professional musician Matthew J Hampson.

“We are so thankful to everyone who has volunteered to take part, especially Matt,” added Fiona.

“He has a hectic music schedule, so the fact that he is giving up his time is very humbling. He also has a big event coming up at St David’s Hall on April 26 called An Evening Of Movies and Musicals, and has invited us along to do a bucket collection for Alfie.”

She added: “I feel as if I have so many people to thank. We have been selected for the green token scheme at ASDA in Leckwith for the next month. Please do give us your green token if you are there shopping! We have also been nominated by The Magic Wok Takeaway in Glebe Street as their 5p carrier bag charity, and they have already given us £110.”

Their first official fundraising event was held just over a week ago – a quiz night with celebrity Egghead CJ de Mooi, and raised a massive £800.00.

“It was such an entertaining evening, with some particularly hard questions, but everyone seemed to have a fantastic time. That fact that we raised so much money is incredible.”
