PENARTH RNLI volunteer crew have released a video of the rescue of three kayakers from Flat Holm Island on Sunday, March 16.
RNLI crew used the Atlantic 85 class lifeboat, as well as the D-class lifeboat, to assist the kayakers after they were requested to launch at 4.40pm.
As Penarth lifeboat crew arrived on the Island they found that one member of the group had damaged his craft with water entering the kayak.
Due to moderate seas and soon to be failing light the crew decided to request the assistance of the station’s D-class lifeboat to help transfer the group and their equipment from the North East side of Flat Holm Island to the Atlantic 85 lifeboat, when they could then be taken back to Penarth.
After the casualties were transferred from the D-class lifeboat to the larger Atlantic lifeboat they were given lifejackets and suitable kit by the RNLI volunteers to help protect them from the cold.
The kayakers, along with their crafts, were then taken by lifeboat back to Penarth where they were given hot drinks at the lifeboat station to warm up when back on dry land.
After warming up the kayakers thanked all of Penarth’s lifeboat volunteers, whether their role was afloat or ashore, before departing.
