TRIBUTES have been paid to Martin Rogers, a stalwart of Windsor Lawn Tennis Club in Penarth, following his death from cancer, at the age of 65.

Mr Rogers, who died on March 18, was well known at Windsor Lawn Tennis Club for his sense of humour, strength of character, and sheer determination to win a point.

And also for his unstinting support of the club behind the scenes for more than 30 years.

He held the post of treasurer when he first joined the club and was a great advocate for the grass courts which he lovingly looked after for many years. He put hours of work into cutting the grass, applying white lines and tending to the courts ‘off season’.

Using his engineering skills he built various devices to help with the care of the grass and shale courts at a time when the club couldn’t afford to buy ‘fancy’ machinery. It is sad that he won’t be able to show his new grandchild how clever he was at inventing things.

His tennis skills were second to none.

A club spokesman said: "Martin was famous for his unusual smash and a style of play that meant he could just stand and wave his racket fore-hand and back-hand. He read the game so well. After winning a point his famous chortle made opponents cross and partners giggle.

He will be sorely missed by us all at the club and our thoughts and condolences go out to his wife Jenny and family at this very sad time."

A thanksgiving service will be held in Stanwell Road Baptist Church, Penarth, on Monday, April 7, at 2.30pm.
