AN EXHIBITION of iconic images captured by a Sully photographer who has snapped some of the world's biggest rock stars is coming to Cardiff.

Chalkie Davies is the man responsible for some of the 1970s and 1980s most enduring images of stars such as David Bowie, Paul McCartney, The Clash, Debbie Harry, Bruce Springsteen and countless others.

He also shot iconic album covers for the likes of The Specials, Thin Lizzy and The Who.

Now, a collection of his early works, taken during his tenure with the NME in the late 1970s, is set to be displayed at the National Museum Cardiff from May next year.

Originally from Sully, Chalkie began training as an aircraft engineer before - aged 20 - deciding to take up photography for a living.

In 1975 he became staff photographer at the NME, where he worked until 1979 shooting numerous covers and features as well as hitting the road with some of the biggest rock and new-wave stars of the era.

Now living in New York, Chalkie now primarily works in studio and has only recently started the painstaking process of reviewing his archives for exhibit.

"Chalkie Davies Photographer: The NME Years" will run at Cardiff's National Museum from May 2015 to August 2015. Entry is free.
