Woman suffers 'minor injuries' after shop sign falls on her in Penarth town centre

A WOMAN has suffered minor injuries after a shop sign fell on her in Penarth town centre earlier this afternoon.

The woman, described as a senior citizen, was outside the entrance to Euronics Centre Kitchener & Thomas on Windsor Road when the signage at the top of the building fell on top of her during high winds.

Two other men, reportedly including the shop manager, were also injured by the shop fascia falling.

A South Wales Police spokeswoman confirmed that they suffered minor injuries and that none of them were life threatening.

A South Wales Ambulance spokeswoman added that one rapid response vehicle and two emergency ambulances were despatched to the scene.

She added that the woman was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, and that a man was treated at the scene. 

Fire Service crew attended to make the area safe and police closed off part of Windsor Road to deal with the incident.

Michael Hooper, station manager of Penarth Fire Station, said at the scene that they were working to make the area safe.

The incident was reported to the fire service at 12.48pm, with police and albumance crew also attending the scene.

He added that after the highways department attended the scene a building inspector from the Vale of Glamorgan Council would make sure the structure of the building was safe.

Nicola Watkins, who was working at the Co-Operative store on Windsor Road when it happened, said that the sign fell in two parts, with the left hand side falling first follwed by the right hand side.

"I heard a bang and I looked round and saw them picking up the sign and there was a lady underneath it," she said.

"When I heard the second sign coming down I looked over and saw a man rubbing his leg."
