MERTHYR TOWN 0

SULLY SPORTS 3

ON what is easily the best pitch in the league, Sully Sports Football Club Ladies put in a determined performance to grind out the win.

The 3G pitch had retained its elegance after withstanding the battering from the recent wind and rain and it was Sully who used the sizeable pitch to their advantage early on to take the lead when Frankie Taylor beat a full back before clipping a glorious shot over the stranded 'keeper from the corner of the 18-yard box.

Sully continued to press their hosts with some excellent passing football and chances were created at will via crosses from wingers Kimberley Margetts and Abi Smyth.

Sports' back line of Sarah Glover, Emma Collins, Kiesha Cordle and Jess Ham camped on the halfway line, nipping any attacks in the bud, while midfielders Emma Reynolds, Thea Howells and Taylor found space for a succession of through balls.

Jess Cogbill was a nuisance to the entire Merthyr defence, but the all-important finishing touch was lacking and it remained 1-0 at half time.

As Merthyr hit back, a lively and experienced earned herself no less than four one-to-one chances against Sully goalkeeper and woman of the match Abi White. Outwitting her opponent, White came out on top on each occasion bar one. On that occasion, she was rounded but, as the Merthyr player appeared to have slotted home, Cordle showed unbelievable pace and desire to sprint past White and the opposition for a sliding goal-line clearance.

This appeared to turn the tide and Sully started to regain the momentum. Hattie Gillet and Lauren Young were introduced for Cobill and the now injured Cordle and, shortly after, a free kick was brilliantly dispatched by Collins to Reynolds, who beat the offside trap to make it 2-0. The same players combined again soon after at a corner, with Reynolds again finding the net with a header to earn herself the title of 'Fox in the Box.'

Sully were back in action last night (Wednesday) against Cardiff Development.
