SATURDAY'S heavy thunder showers resulted in a complete washout for all four Penarth Cricket Club sides.

The Thirds managed three overs against Abertillery, who, to their credit, agreed to travel in what was probably always a lost cause.

An early night in the bar was the result and the planned fancy dress "World Cup" party was a great success despite the lack of cricket. Many thanks must go to Tom P and all his helpers.

Sunday dawned dry and, despite one shower, Penarth managed to complete a Welsh Cup game against old rivals Barry Athletic.

Barry were asked to bat first, perhaps to allow a few hangovers to subside, and fine bowling by off spinner Richard Skone and left arm spinner Mark Thomas enabled Penarth to restrict them to 104 all out. Rhett Jones hit 29 and Peter Hellyar 21 in the Barry total, with Skone taking three for 11 from eight overs and Thomas three for 14 from eight.

In reply, Penarth lost a couple of early wickets but Will Barker steadied the ship and, together with Dave Stevens (sorry for the spelling last week Dave), saw Penarth through to a comfortable eight-wicket victory in 22 overs. Barker scored 41 not out and Stevens 26 not out.

Penarth will play Port Talbot at home in the next round.

This Saturday, weather permitting, the 1st XI travel to Newbridge, the Seconds and Thirds are home and away to Welsh Asians respectively and the 4th XI play Newbridge Thirds at home.
