THREE people stranded on Sully Island were rescued by Penarth RNLI’s inshore lifeboat last night.

It was the fourth rescue since a traffic light warning system was installed on the causeway leading to the island.

Fifteen people have now been rescued by the lifeboat and coastguard crew in the space of three weeks since the red, amber and green lights, which also feature a countdown timer of how long it left to cross the causeway, were installed.

At 8.32pm on Thursday, July 3, Penarth Coastguard were tasked to a report of four people possibly cut-off on Sully Island. They arrived on-scene to find one person camping on the island who had called Swansea Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCC) to inform them. Three others had come across the causeway and had not seen the sign and lost track of time. They called Swansea MRCC themselves and the Penarth Lifeboat Station ILB was tasked to investigate and bring back the three casualties to the beach on the mainland where they were met by the Coastguard team. The casualties needed no medical attention and were briefed on tide times and also the new traffic light sign located on the kiosk.
