THE JAMES Sommerin Restaurant on Penarth Esplanade is due to undergo work to connect mains electricity to the building.

The essential works will involve laying 140 metres of electrical cable underground outside the restaurant to allow the restaurant and associated buildings to run on mains electricity.

No parking bays on the Esplanade will be affected by the works, and pedestrians are set to be diverted to the opposite footway via the existing zebra crossing.

Works are set to begin on Monday, July 21,once the Penarth Summer Festival has finished, and are due to be completed within two weeks.

Currently the restaurant is being powered by a large generator, but these works will allow the generator to be removed and the remaining hoardings surrounding it taken down.

Councillor Rob Curtis said: “We are very keen to support new businesses in the Vale, but we are also mindful of minimising disruption to residents and visitors.

“These improvements will allow this business to flourish, and we will make every effort to ensure the work is completed quickly and with minimal fuss. The completion of these works will also allow for the Vale Council’s plans to upgrade the Esplanade to move forward, once the ongoing work by Welsh Water is complete.”

Owner and Chef James Sommerin said: “I would like to thank the Council for working with us in scheduling these works. We would, of course, like to apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause residents of Penarth. The work will be the final stage in establishing a new first class restaurant for the town.”
