THE FIRST ever Open Studio Trail showcasing the work of local artists throughout Penarth has been hailed as a great success.

Nine studios agreed to be part of the walking trail, all within close proximity to Penarth town centre, as part of the Penarth Summer Festival last Saturday, May 12.

Eighteen artists took part and the work on show covered fine art, glass and ceramics. All the work shown was incredibly diverse and the different styles on show meant there really was something for everyone.

Getting the artistic community together was the idea of Cathy O’Doherty of Cod Glass. There are many successful art trails in other parts of the country, and as Penarth residents are so supportive of the garden’s trail, she thought this same format could be applied to artist studios.

Once a date was set, a number of the more well known artists in Penarth, such as Pauline Williams and Shirley Anne Owen were approached, and they were very enthusiastic to be part of the inaugural event. Shirley Anne Owen called it a “really positive experience – definitely a success”.

Angelina Hall, of Gorgeous Glass Ltd, said: "As this was the first year, none of us knew what to expect or how many people would come. During the course of the day, it was apparent what a success the day was going to be, as there was a steady stream of people who were all very interested in viewing and hearing about the work on show. All agreed that the art work was an incredibly high standard, and were so surprised that Penarth had such talent which has been hidden until now”

Afterwards, all the artists agreed how great the day had been, to be able to meet and talk to people in the relaxed environment of their studios. Judith Martin-Jones said: “There were so many visitors – new faces – energetic cyclists all the way from Cardiff and lots of keen art lovers. We had lots of compliments on our new venture – well done to all involved.”

Some intrepid people did the whole nine studios, and were offered refreshments of cake, tea and coffee with donations to the charity Breast Cancer Care. Approximately £223.89 was raised for the charity on the day.

All the artists give their thanks to Penarth Town Council, Penarth Library, Foxy’s Deli, The Windsor Bookshop and the Penarth Pier Pavilion who displayed the posters and gave out the trail maps.

It has been agreed by all the artists that the event can be extended to a two or three day event in next year’s Summer Festival, and hope to create a diverse and dynamic event not to be missed.
