A DINAS Powys man has appeared in court charged with attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm to another man after a car hit eight pedestrians in Newport on Sunday night.

Joseph Davies, 25, of Drylla, Dinas Powys, as well as Lewis Wilkins, 21, of Sevenoaks Road, Ely, appeared at Newport Magistrates Court yesterday (August 5) charged with attempting to unlawfully and maliciously cause grievous bodily harm to Joshua Seivwright

Chairwoman of magistrates Janet Anderton sent the case straight to Newport Crown Court where they will enter pleas on August 21.

The defendants, who were arrested along with others, were granted bail until that date.

Both Wilkins and Davies were given a curfew of 7pm to 7am; ordered not to enter Newport except for a pre-arranged appointment with solicitors or to attend court, to not contact directly or indirectly each other or witnesses; to reside at their agreed addresses and to report to Cardiff Bay police station daily.

This follows Monday’s incident where police were called to Commercial Road, Pill, around 6.30pm.

Eight people were injured in the incident and six people were arrested.

Others arrested were a 27-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and violent disorder; a 25-year-old man arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and attempted section 18 assault; 28-year-old man arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and a 29-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They remained in custody as the Penarth Times went to press last night, August 5.

Three women aged 27, 25 and 31, were injured in the incident with the 31-year-old woman described as having “life-changing injuries” which include a number of broken and fractured bones by a Gwent Police spokesman.
