A CAMPAIGN warning outdoor workers across Wales about the dangers of sun cancer drew to a close earlier this month.

Tenovus, Wales' largest cancer charity, teamed up with Western Power Distribution (WPD) to launch the 'Here Comes the Sun' initiative.

WPD seized the opportunity to sponsor the Tenovus initiative in recognition of their large number of outdoor working employees.

During the summer months, when the sun is at its strongest, it is important for outdoor workers to take precautions and stay safe in the sun.

“We are delighted to support Tenovus and have been keen supporters of its ‘Here Comes The Sun’ campaign for several years," said Phil Davies, WPD’s Network Services Manager for Wales

"Safety is our number one priority – the safety of the public and of our staff, and we have a duty to promote it wherever and whenever we can.

"With such a large number of staff working outdoors, we are well aware of the dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun. This is why we always make sun screen and sun block available, and provide advice and guidance."

With Wales having experienced a sunshine filled summer, the public has also been encouraged by Tenovus to follow their tops tips on how to be ‘Sun Safe’.

Building on previous year’s activity, the aim has been to raise awareness of the causes of skin cancer, how to recognise the symptoms and what steps can be taken to reduce the risk.

The campaign ran from June until the end of August, with a Sun Cream van touring a wide variety of locations in South Wales. Stop offs included Tenovus charity shops, schools, events and outdoor workplaces where the public were provided with sun safety information, a sun safety quiz and free samples of sun cream.

Skin cancer is now one of the most common types of cancer in people between the ages of 15 to 34. Each year around 700 people in Wales are diagnosed with malignant melanoma and over 100 people will die from the condition.
