A PENARTH jewellers has spoken of its frustration after thieves stole more than £3,500 worth of stock during a burglary in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Thieves broke into Windsor Arcade through the main door and, after smashing a window and damaging a door to Northern Star Bespoke Jewellers, took more than £3,500 worth of stock from a display cabinet before fleeing the scene.

The shop has been closed throughout this week and is hoping to re-open this weekend once the door and window have been replaced.

The bespoke jewellers had to cancel a special event to celebrate its fifth birthday today, November 13, as they were unable to get windows and furnishings repaired in time. As part of their celebrations they planned to unveil their Bespoke ‘Janice’ Daffodil pendant and Brooch in support of Marie Curie Hospice Cardiff and the Vale.

Matthew Mullooly, the owner of Northern Star Bespoke Jewellers, said the burglary couldn’t have come at a worse time, as they were looking forward to celebrating their fifth birthday and preparing for the build up to Christmas just six weeks away.

“We can’t go ahead with it for safety reasons, and that’s the most disappointing thing of all,” he said.

“It’s just a bit upsetting at this time of year.

“It’s just frustrating more than anything.”

Sample rings showing bespoke pieces worth more than £3,500 were also taken from the display cabinet.

“It could have ruined the business,” added Mr Mullolly.

“Everything was insured, but we won’t be able to have the Christmas we were planning for.”

He added that the cost of damages of replacing the custom door and window could also cost more than £6,000.

The break-in occurred at around 2am on Saturday morning, November 8.
