DOMINO’S pizza chain has been given the green light to move into the former Tropical Tandoori premises on Windsor Terrace.

The pizza takeaway has been granted planning permission for extraction and ventilation equipment by the Vale council, and can now begin plans to move into the former Indian restaurant.

The pizza chain did not need to apply for a change of use planning application as the premises already had a licence as a restaurant and takeaway.

During last month’s Penarth Town Council planning committee meeting councillors warned that parking outside the pizza takeaway would be “a recipe for disaster”, and warned that a number of local residents had also raised concerns about parking in the area due to the surrounding bus stop, zebra crossings and double yellow lines.

After granting planning permission on Monday, November 11, the Vale council’s director of visible services, Miles Punter, said that the new pizza outlet would be subject to “traffic safety monitoring” in a letter to the town council.

In the planning meeting Councillor Neil Thomas, who represents the Cornerswell ward, said there had been problems with parking for many years due to its location and described it as a “hazardous” area when there was extra delivery traffic.

Councillor Rosemary Cook, who represents the St Augustine’s ward, said that although there were already traffic wardens and double yellow lines there, “what’s going to happen on a Sunday evening at 10pm when there’s pizza collection and no traffic wardens?

“It’s a recipe for disaster.”

Councillor Philip Rapier, who represents the St Augustine’s ward, said that he didn’t want to seem “draconian” but he was concerned that the bench outside the Tropical Tandoori could become a “dining area” and said he could see potential abuse of it.

Councillors had also raised concerns about deliveries and parking on Hickman Road and Herbert Terrace by Tesco Express.

The planning committee agreed to send a letter to the Vale council about the parking problems by the Tropical Tandoori and Tesco Express on Hickman Road, and subsequently received a reply from the director of visible services, Miles Punter.

During last night’s planning committee (November 13) councillor Neil Thomas, the chair of the committee, said that in his letter Miles Punter said Domino’s would be subject to “traffic safety monitoring” and would review loading and unloading measures for Tesco Express.
