A BID to bring the West End to Penarth moves a step closer this week with the Town council's leisure and amenities committee set to back plans for live "Event Cinema" at the Paget Rooms.

Event Cinema beams West End shows directly to venues around the UK, allowing audiences to watch live theatre on the big screen.

Earlier this year Penarth Town Councillors requested more information about the cost of necessary equipment before they would back the plans.

In a report due to go before tonight's (Thursday, November 27) leisure and amenities committee it has been recommended that cheaper "non DCI" equipment - equipment that allows for live event broadcast but not for showing movies - be purchased and Event Theatre be given the council's support, ahead of making a proposal to the Policy and Finance committee.

The Town Clerk's report notes that the non-DCI equipment could also be used for airing live sporting events, or even one off musical performances from the Sydney Opera House.

The Paget Rooms is a Grade 2 listed building and the Vale council has advised that installing a satellite would be permitted providing its is removable and out of view.

With the Paget Rooms currently running at a loss of more than £32,000 a year, it is thought that Event Cinema could breath new life into the venue, which can accommodate 280 people.

An earlier report noted that over a minimum of 10 showings a year, at 50 per cent capacity it could yield a profit of £5,000 but at maximum capacity and with five re-runs per showing it could generate a profit of £95,000 per annum.

The latest report reads: "Whilst the primary aim is not to turn a profit, we do aim to be able to sustain the venue and be able to further invest in services for the town and therefore we need to reduce the risk of a loss.

"Any increased visitors attracted to the Paget Rooms would be an opportunity to promote not only the venue but the town in general and the facilities and attractions it has to offer."
