A PENARTH filmmaker has launched an online web series showing the town under attack from aliens, dinosaurs and missiles.

The science fiction comedy drama, filmed entirely on an iPad with the use of special effects, has been created by amateur filmmaker Fritz O'Skennick and fellow writer and director Nigel Streeter.

Fritz, who has been filming the eight episode series in his spare time, said: “The story follows the adventures of two hapless Penarth residents who after an encounter with UFO's at Cosmeston Country Park find themselves thrown back in time.

“During the series they first have to deal with dinosaurs in Cretaceous Cosmeston, Apemen in Neogene Cosmeston and Dragons in Medieval Cosmeston, with the medieval village and various wooden statues used as background throughout the filming.”

The series also features Alexandra Park shot in black and white as a silent movie, Penarth beach and St Mary’s Well Bay based millions of years in the future, and Penarth town centre under attack from war. Six episodes have already been finished, with two more in production,

Fritz added: “We have also begged, asked and endeavoured to encourage many Penarth residents to take part in it.”

Throughout all of the scenes a wide range of special effects are used to bring the story to life, with bombs and helicopters crashing to earth, rockets being launched from Penarth beach, and dinosaurs and UFO’s roaming the earth.

Fritz, who has filmed and edited ‘Penarth: The Web Series’, said: “The seeds of the series were first spawned in a movie trailer shot in October 2012 called 'Penarth in Peril'.

“It featured myself and other Penarth residents, Sue Marsh, Alisha Marsh and Amy Hilbert, and contained scenes of Penarth under attack and blown up with various special effects. “

He added: “The project as a whole began in March of 2014 when I met fellow local writer and actor, Nigel Streeter, while working on the set of 'Being There', a short ghost film by 'Dontlookdown Films’.

“From there we decided that we wanted to make a short quirky UFO/Sci-fi film.”

The pair soon shot and filmed the first few scenes and after several days of editing, they had a science fiction short film that became very popular with friends, fans and viewers on various online social media sites.

Fritz, 43, added: “Then with a suggestion from a friend, Will Ford, the seed of time travel and dinosaurs was laid. With the introduction of Nicola Rodgers, a talented a beautiful actress who was to become the mysterious woman from the future, and local seasoned actor Chris Woods, skilfully playing various descendants of his original character, all the pieces fell into place.”

Fritz, of Byrd Crescent, added: “It is hoped upon its final completion that we can show it in its entirety at the Penarth Pier Pavilion cinema for a Vale debut, and at Chapter Arts for its Cardiff debut.”
