SPEEDING restrictions are set to be imposed on one of the main roads in Dinas Powys after residents won a battle over speeding motorists.

A 20 mile an hour speed limit is set to be applied to the bend on Murch Road between Castle Drive and Camms Corner.

The scheme affects around 300 yards of Murch Road with a 20 mph limit, plus four sets of speed cushions to be installed to slow down motorists.

A flat top raised section will also be installed to assist safer pedestrian crossing.

The restrictions come after local residents launched a fresh campaign for a pedestrian crossing on the road just two months ago.

Protesters said there was an “urgent need” for a pedestrian crossing as they struggled to reach shops and services on either side of the road.

They also raised concerns about schoolchildren crossing the road and the amount of traffic in the area.

Local Plaid Cymru councillor Val Hartrey, who led a demonstration where local residents crossed the road several times to show the need for a crossing, welcomes the decision for speed restrictions to be imposed.

“The strength of feeling amongst locals was very impressive,” she said.

“We were also grateful for the support of many community and county councillors at the protest, including John Fanshaw, Janie Jones, Margaret Randall and Chris Franks.”

Fellow Dinas Powys Councillor Keith Hatton thanked the Vale council.

“We appreciate the work of the Visible Services Department.

“This scheme was excluded by the Government’s rules for major sources of safety schemes, so alternative funds had to be found.”

He added: “More than 2,600 vehicles per day travel along this length of road, many at inappropriate speed. With the number of pupils and pensioners in the neighbourhood the dangers are obvious.”

Councillor Chris Franks added: “This is a dreadful stretch of road with very poor visibility for both pedestrians and drivers. This poses a serious risk to people.”

Dinas Powys residents have also called for speed restrictions to be imposed on the junction of Cardiff Road and Station Road, branding it “the most dangerous junction in the Vale of Glamorgan”. Twelve incidents have been reported on the Dinas Powys Pictures Facebook page this year alone, with users demanding that traffic lights, speed bumps or alterations to the junction should be made to prevent more accidents

The latest incident involved two cars colliding on Friday afternoon.

Michael Clogg, operational manager for Highways and Engineering at the Vale council, said: “The council is committed to improving highway safety, and is considering the feasibility of various measures to reduce the number of collisions at the junction. We are working with police and other organisations, such as Go Safe, to reduce factors that exacerbate the likelihood of collisions such as excessive speed along Cardiff Road.”
