UNEMPLOYMENT in Cardiff South and Penarth has fallen, according to figures providing the latest snapshot of the job market.

Updated figures for the last month, released today (December 17), show 6899 people were claiming jobseekers allowance (JSA) – 1846 less than at the same time last year and a 21 per cent fall.

Young people, aged 18 to 24, claiming JSA totalled 1615 – 580 less than in 2013 and a 26 per cent fall.

The statistics revealed Wales has experienced 10 consecutive months of falling unemployment.

Customer service operations manager for the DWP Cardiff & Vale, Matthew Thomas said seasonal work was not so much a factor these days as the hospitality industry was an all-year-round activity.

He said many people were being helped into employment with tailored support which included advisors, work coaches, wifi access in Barry and Penarth JobcentrePlus’ – also giving customers a greater ability to help themselves.

He said: “We are really pleased that the level of unemployment Is falling. It’s good news for everybody but we’ve still got a job to do to help people find work.”

A Welsh Government spokesman said: “Unemployment in Wales is lower than at the same time last year, while youth unemployment is still falling faster in Wales than in the UK. Employment in Wales remains well above its historic average and claimant count is at its lowest rate since 2008.

“When these figures are considered alongside other key economic indicators, such as the largest increase in GVA per head in the UK and record inward investment, it is clear that our policies are making a difference, supporting jobs and growth right across Wales.”

Welsh secretary Stephen Crabb MP said: "Despite the rise in unemployment over the past three months, the underlying trend is positive and the Welsh economy is growing.

“We are creating the right long term conditions to help grow the economy but we know that we face some big challenges and there is more to do.

"That is why I am determined that we continue with our long term plan for growth to increase living standards, strengthen the economy and ensure a more financially secure for hardworking people across Wales."
