MEMBERS of Penarth’s Royal British Legion have launched a last-ditch bid to save the club premises.

The club premises on Station Road is due to close its doors on January 31, with the branch carrying on in temporary accommodation, but members have called for an extraordinary general meeting to discuss alternatives to keep the club open.

A total of 36 members have now signed a petition calling on the club to hold a meeting as soon as possible to discuss “options open for continuation”.

One member who signed the petition, which was sent by recorded mail to the branch on Monday and delivered on Tuesday, said: “It’s to ask some questions about the closure and to come up with options for continuation.”

A special general meeting has now been called for Thursday, January 29, at 8pm, to discuss the club premises.

It was confirmed last month that the limited company would be closing down the premises on Station Approach on January 31.

Falling membership and changing drinking habits had been blamed for the closure of the club, with “difficult trading conditions” resulting in “ongoing losses”.

Mr Morris said at the time that “sadly and regrettably” members had voted to close down the club.
