TRIBUTES have been paid to a Good Samaritan and community stalwart who “loved helping people”.

Gordon Lowe, who died suddenly aged 78, raised thousands of pounds for charity and was well-known in Dinas Powys for his selfless community work.

A keen supporter of Marie Curie, Gordon enjoyed selling daffodils in nearby supermarkets and was the resident bingo caller at Murch Community Centre.

He sorted and delivered the Scout Post and dedicated a lot of his time to helping local clubs and societies.

After serving for several years in the Army, in 1960 Gordon began a career as a printer in Cardiff-based GKN, where he worked for 34 years without missing a day.

He married his late wife Joan in 1963 and the couple’s only child, Mike, was born four years later.

The family moved from Canton, Cardiff, to Dinas Powys in 1974 and Gordon became heavily involved in the local football club, first with the junior section and then moving onto the seniors.

His love of sport would remain constant throughout his life and he was particularly fond of following Glamorgan on the county cricket circuit.

He was at Taunton to watch the Welsh county win the championship in 1997 and was a regular down the old Sophia Gardens.

More recently, he enjoyed following the trials and tribulations of Dinas Powys Cricket Club at Parc Bryn-Y-Don.

Mike said: “Dad kept himself busy doing various voluntary work around the community and two years ago won the Volunteer of the Year Award - an award he was very proud of.

“Most Mondays he could be seen in Morrisons, Barry, where he would escort the elderly with their shopping. Every Wednesday he would attend Murch Community Centre, where he was the resident bingo caller.

“Dad was often selling daffodils for Marie Curie, a charity close to his heart, and towards the end of the year he would be found at the local Scout Hall sorting the Scout Post, then later delivering it around Dinas.

“He loved helping people. Dad is going to be sorely missed by so many people; my thanks to everybody who attended his funeral and their very generous donations to Marie Curie.”
