A LOCAL resident has called on the Vale council to put up temporary traffic lights on Windsor Road whilst roadworks are completed.

The traffic lights and pelican crossing have recently been taken down as work is carried out to create a new right turn lane into Pill Street and address drainage issues in the area.

The Vale council has said that temporary traffic lights would have added a delay to starting the work and caused greater disruption to local residents.

But one local resident has warned that pensioners, bus users and children walking to school were struggling to cross the busy road without a safe crossing whilst roadworks are completed.

“It’s just very dangerous at the moment,” they said.

“It’s difficult to cross the road as the traffic won’t give way to you.

“The older person waiting to get to the bus stop could take that chance and get hit by a car.

“I know what they are trying to do but you shouldn’t be without traffic lights on this road for the safety of old and young people.”

The works started on January 12 and are due to be completed, with a relocated pelican crossing and traffic lights, by the first week of March.

Mike Clogg, operational manager for highways, said: “The works to relocate the existing pedestrian crossing, address drainage issues and create a new right turn lane at the junction of Windsor Road and Pill Street are being undertaken to address the concerns of local residents.

“The existing pelican crossing has had to be removed to allow for these works to take place. The installation of temporary traffic lights would have added a delay to starting the work and caused greater disruption to local residents. The construction phase commenced on January 12 and subject to weather conditions should be completed by the first week in March.”
