AFTER saving the life of a budgie with a broken leg a local vets are appealing for the owner to come forward.

Vale Veterinary Centre took in the poorly bird after he was found on the side of the road near Dow Corning with a broken leg last Tuesday, February 18.

They performed lifesaving surgery on the young bird and he is now fighting fit and hoping to make a full recovery.

Richard Williams, owner of the veterinary practice based on the Ty Verlon industrial estate near Sully, said they needed to act fast when the budgie was taken in: “We realised we needed to make a decision quickly as his leg was severely fractured and he would die from haemorrhage and infection unless something was done, so rather than give up on him we decided give it a go and try and fix it,” he said.

“Normally we would use a big metal pin to fix a dog or a cat’s limb but the only thing to hand the size of a Budgie limb was a hypodermic needle.”

He said that the budgie, named ‘Peter’ by staff, was now recovering well.

“He is doing fine post op, but it is still 50/50 whether he will be able to regain full use of the leg.

“He is up on the perch now, just using the affected limb to balance and rest on with no grip as of yet, but he seems much brighter.”

The vets are now appealing for the owners of ‘Peter’ to come forward, and assured them they won’t face any veterinary bills for the work carried out.

“There will be no bill, just relief that he will be back with his owners safe and sound,” added Richard.
