A NEW mobile application developed by Public Health Wales, will get the public to think about their level of alcohol consumption.

Public Health Wales, in partnership with Alcohol Concern, have developed the ‘One Drink One Click’ app to help people anonymously monitor their drinking.

The free app – not available on Android phones currently – will tell users how many units a drink contains and measures their data against healthy consumption guidelines.

The Welsh Government estimates that every week in Wales, 1,200 hospital admissions are attributed to alcohol.

The app will be a resource for the ‘Have a Word’ programme, which motivates health professionals to offer health advice at times when patients are most receptive.

Cardiff University’s Violence and Society Research Group created and developed the ‘Have a Word’ brand after trials showed advice given in precise ways that capitalise on “teachable moments”, such as when stitches are being removed, cut drinking to less dangerous levels.

Public Health Wales have trained over 7,000 people in how to ‘Have a Word’.

Alcohol Concern has sponsored the development and delivery of the new app and is a key partner for Public Health Wales, as it aims to protect and improve health and wellbeing in Wales.

All data provided through the app is anonymous with Public Health Wales having access to help them understand alcohol use in Wales unless the user opts out.
