A BAKERY is celebrating after being named Wales' best at the Food Awards Wales ceremony in Cardiff recently.

Penarth and Cardiff-based Brutons the Bakers was recognised as Bakery of the Year for its hard work and effort within the food industry at the event on May 11.

There were several categories such as gastro pubs, restaurants and takeaways which looked to honour local producers.

Richard Best, company owner and director, said: "It is a great honour to win an award for which our customers have taken the trouble to nominate us.

"With thousands of votes cast across the nation and hundreds of companies nominated, it is a testament to our staff and their hard work and professionalism to come out on top."

The Pickled Pepper and the Fig Tree, both from Penarth, were also shortlisted.

The black tie ceremony was hosted by radio presenter Polly James and took place at the Mercure Holland House Hotel.

As well as the Awards, the event helped raise funds for the official charity partner, Make A Wish Foundation UK, granting magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions.

Yasmin Mahmood, of event organisers Creative Oceanic, said: “After the great success of the Food Awards England and Wales - which were held in Manchester last year - it was apparent the Welsh food industry deserved a greater platform for recognition.

"It was a fantastic evening and was a great pleasure to be amongst the top restaurants, takeaways, suppliers, manufacturers, specialists and many more attendees who were representing their businesses on the evening. Congratulations to all the winners and the finalists."
