THE "very popular" local food festival returns to Penarth this summer.

Gwyrddio Penarth Greening will host the event on Sunday, July 12 from 11am-4pm at the Kymin house and grounds on Beach Road.

Once described by a stallholder as "the festival with the view", the community event aims to show off the best of local produce and the local food business.

There will be a mix of old favourites and a number of new additions in what is set to be one of the highlights of the summer in Penarth.

Cheeses, breads, preserves, honey, beers, herbs and many more items will be on offer to visitors as well as hot food such as Glam Lamb burgers, a fish grill provided by the Fig Tree restaurant and vegetarian options.

Restaurant James Sommerin and Bar 44 will also be on hand with stalls of their own.

The festival will also see a number of family activities including a kids' crafts tent, growing projects, and an educational chicken and duck display.

GPG say the festival provides an opportunity to raise awareness of sustainable food issues and to promote other projects.

A key feature of the day will be the showcasing of GPG's 'Shop in Penarth' scheme which seeks to support local independent business and highlight their importance to the town's economy.

GPG Chair and festival organiser Anthony Slaughter said: "We are really pleased with the ongoing popularity of the Food Festival. Now in its fifth year the event is a real community celebration of the local and the sustainable."

Entry is free and more information can be found at gpgpenarth.org.uk.
