BARRY’S self-proclaimed ‘Indiana Jones’ finally bowed out of BBC One’s Prized Apart as super-smart wife Nicky was unable to save him for a fifth consecutive time.

Host Emma Willis announced the 47-year-old Welsh translator had been passed okay to continue with the survival challenge, but a hospital examination in the UK when he returned from Morocco revealed he had broken his arm.

Vale and Barry town councillor Steffan this week failed a test of “brain power and strategy” – finishing second – and, after injuring his arm, crossed a wooden slat-rope bridge, over a canyon, blindfolded carrying a bowl, in a timed challenge.

Steffan said: “I was waving goodbye to Kennedy and I fell backwards. I used my arm to break my fall. It’s not the easiest way to do a survival challenge.

“Wishing another contestant good luck. I fall fracturing my radius.”

Nicky was unable to name Thessaloniki, in Greece, as a European port meaning that the Barry Island couple fell at the last ‘gate’ at the semi-final stage.

Nicky was then unable to answer that there is a Slipper Lobster and mum Julia correctly answered her question sending daughter Kennedy back to Morocco.

Steffan said: “I’ve experienced things most people will never experience. One thing I have learnt is never to take my family for granted.”

Emma Willis and Reggie Yates present the show in which contestants battling to win £100,000.

“I’ve experienced things most people will never experience. One thing I have learnt is never to take my family for granted,” Steffan said.

Back in Barry Island, dad-and-mum-of-three Steffan and Nicky said they had enjoyed taking part in the show.

Explaining his adventurer role, Steffan said: “What people don’t realise is that one slip and that’s it. You can’t do it again.”

Both got down to the last five couples, out of ten, and Steffan said he’s enjoyed parts of the trip that didn’t feature in the finished show like learning about one of the official languages – Berber.

However, he added that he never wanted “to see a sardine again.”

Nicky said: “I always knew other people's questions,” but she added: “You’ve only got one life and you have to take a few risks some times. You can’t just turn down the chance worrying about what other people think.”
